Statement About Pet Food Recall
Hermit-crabs.com grieves with all pet owners who have lost their pets or dealt with animal suffering due to the recall of tainted dog and cat food.
Two years ago, I was rocked by the distastrous deaths of two of my beloved cats. After doing a lot of research, I came to the conclusion that the most likely cause of their kidney failure was a diet of commercial dry cat food. What is more distressing is that it was a "non-grocery-store brand" at that time, and a brand I trusted (one of the brands that was later recalled).
All my research said the best food for my cats is raw meat. The cats unfortunately don't much care for raw meat! The cats and I compromised and I did get them off an all-dry food diet. The reports I'd read said that a diet of all dry food was very hard on their digestive systems. Now they eat Merrick wet food and INNOVA EVO dry cat and kitten food. Since we switched diets, all our cats are healthier, especially our older cat. Lipomas (fat tumors) that she had under her skin disappeared when we stopped feeding the cheap cat food.
Please do your cats and dogs a favor and take a good close look at the ingredients in their food. If it contains wheat products, corn products or any by-products, do not use it!

Hermit Crab Owners Go Organic!
That's right! More and more land hermit crab owners are coming to the conclusion that commercially prepared hermit crab food contains harmful chemicals such as ethoxyquin and copper sulfate. This desire to provide hermit crabs with the very best has led Stacey Arenella and Summer Michaelson to draft and publish the All Natural Hermit Crab Sourcebook. This is the only book you need to raise healthy, active land hermit crabs. Don't settle for the typical pet store books -- take it from me, ALL pet store books have some misinformation in them. I have read them all and I urge you, skip the rest and buy the very best!

Hermit crabs love overhead lights!
Yes they do! An overhead light can make a big difference in your hermit crab's activity level! I recently purchased the Repti-Sun 2.0 15 watt fluorescent bulb for my hermit crabs and they responded very positively to it!

Play Sand NOT dangerous to land hermit crabs!
Despite some recent hype over the perception that play sand may be dangerous to land hermit crabs due to the silica content, there is absolutely no evidence that the same silica that causes problems in human lungs also affects hermit crabs. So go ahead and buy that 50 lb. bag from your nearest hardware store. Save some money and don't believe the anti-playsand hype!

Hermit Crab Association featured in article by Newhouse News Service!
Dru Sefton of Newhouse News Service visited with me in August as part of her research of the treatment of land hermit crabs. Her excellent article can be found here.

Sexing of Crabs! That's right, now you CAN tell the sex of your hermit crabs! After closely reading Sue Fox's book and further research at the Library of Congress (and home with my crabbies), I discovered that it is relatively easy to 'sex' your crabbies. Check out my Male or Female? page!

To be on the "cutting edge" of land hermit crab care, why not visit the Hermit Crab Association or Landhermitcrabs.com, two of the oldest and friendliest places online for crabbers of ALL ages!
